Church of San Pietro Barisano

The Church of San Pietro Barisano, dating back to the 12th-13th century, is the largest rupestrian place of worship in the whole of Matera. Thanks to several renovations, it is now possible to see the three naves, the basement where priests’ corpses were left to drain and a 1755 façade. The right aisle contains the altar of the Madonna della Consolazione, with a tuff image of Mary with Jesus, the altar of the Blessed Sacrament with its majolica floor and the altar of San Giuseppe. In the central aisle, on the other hand, is the frame of the altarpiece, while in the left aisle there are several altars: the altar of the Most Holy Crucifix, the altar of the Annunciation and the altar of Santa Maria Maddalena.
