Established in 2000 by the Basilicata region, the Natural Reserve of San Giuliano is home to many species of water birds, thanks to the presence of the homonymous lake. In 1976, it became a Fauna Protection Oasis and in 1989, WFF created the current oasis through nature management. A special discovery took place here in 2006: a whale fossil skeleton dating back to the Pleistocene era was found nearby the lake, which stretches for about 8 kilometres, and was later transferred to one of the Soprintendenza’s laboratories.
There are about 180 bird species in this wonderful reserve, such as coots, grey herons, egrets, great egrets, wigeons, red kites, cormorants and ospreys. Mammals, on the other hand, include martens, otters and wild cats.
