Monte Cofano Reserve

Monte Cofano Reserve is located on a 659-metre high Jurassic limestone promontory. Its arid Dolomite walls create imposing spires upwards and form beautiful coves over the sea. There is an easy path in the park that crosses the entire coast, ideal for those who love trekking or mountain biking. From the summit of Monte Cofano there is an incredible view of the entire area. There are also several caves, including Abisso del Purgatorio and Abisso delle Gole. The Scurati caves contain important remains of some prehistoric settlements. Torre della Tonnara and Torre di San Giovanni are examples of ancient Saracen anti-piracy fortifications.

Flora in the reserve is typically Mediterranean. Unfortunately, the original flora has been wiped out by deforestation and fires. Only fire-resistant plants have survived and thrived. We are talking about the ampelodesma and the dwarf palm. Both of these plants are used for weaving crafts. Among the endemic vegetation are the bonnet sparrow hawk, the cliff cornflower and the Monte Cofano immortelle. In spring, the small karst depression in the reserve fills with the white buttercups of Baudot. In summer, on the other hand, its surface is coloured green by the presence of the water lentil. There is no shortage of orchids. The fauna is characterised by peregrine falcons, the rare Bonelli’s eagle, cormorants, kingfishers, ducks, nocturnal birds of prey and even the red-backed shrike. And then weasels, porcupines, foxes and Sicilian partridges. Among the reptiles, there are the Sicilian lizard, lizard and viper.
It is also possible to visit the Regional Museum ‘Agostino Pepoli’.
