Castle of Lipari

The Castle of Lipari was for centuries the safe fortress where people took refuge in case of raids. It is located in the historic centre of Lipari, between Marina Lunga and Marina Corta.

.

The building has undergone a number of reconstructions over time. The Spanish fortifications, which incorporated the Norman towers and a Greek tower, were built in 1560 following the attack by the pirate Barbarossa. You will find many churches along the way, including the Cathedral of St Bartholomew, patron saint of the Aeolian Islands.

An archaeological park has been created in the southernmost part of the structure. The Acropolis of Lipari also houses the Regional Aeolian Archaeological Museum, with archaeological finds ranging from the Neolithic to the Greco-Roman era. Indeed, the Castle has been inhabited since prehistoric times. More recently, two new sections have been added: one on underwater archaeology and one on volcanology.
