Abbey of Santa Maria di Calena

The Abbey of Santa Maria di Calena is one of the oldest monuments in Italy; it dates back to the 11th century BC and is a typical example of Romanesque architecture. A former Benedictine monastery, the Abbey was for a long time disputed between the powerful Abbeys of Montecassino and Santa Maria di Tremiti, containing mysterious legends. One of them, perhaps the most famous, tells the story of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s daughter, Beatrice Barbarossa, who is said to have died here. Here, the two adjoining churches, the original and the abbey church, are still visible.
