Green hills, fabulous sea and picturesque villages
Gentle, rolling hills alternate with higher, rocky points. An ever-shining sea washes the colourful, welcoming villages. All around, the scent of lemons, olives and oranges. How can one be indifferent to the extraordinary beauty of the Sorrento Peninsula? This town in Campania, which has inspired poets and singers, is famous for having hosted prominent personalities such as Dickens, Nietzsche and D’Annunzio, but above all for its timeless atmosphere.
The main centre is Sorrento, the jewel of the entire coastline. The town has a truly fascinating historic centre, which starts at Piazza Torquato Tasso and winds its way through the alleyways of Corso Italia, full of handicraft and typical products shops. Sorrento is also home to imposing places of worship such as the Cathedral and the Basilica di Sant’Antonino. From here, you can easily reach the major sites of interest: Vico Equense, the perfect spot for a relaxing swim, Massa Lubrense, famous for its rich enogastronomy, Sant’Agata sui due Golfi, a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea, Meta di Sorrento, an ancient Greek and Roman city, and Sant’Agnello, a small town with an agricultural tradition.
Legendary and unspoilt, Punta Campanella is the naturalistic pearl of this beautiful destination. The Protected Marine Area, the place where the mythical Sirens tried to seduce Ulysses, was established in 1997 and stretches along some 40 kilometres of coastline. It can be reached from the small village of Termini, in Massa Lubrense, via an ancient mule track dating back to the 4th century BC. Once there, you will come across a grey tuff tower, where the temple dedicated to Athena was most probably housed, and the lighthouse of Punta Campanella. From here, it will seem like you can touch the island of Capri!
Let yourself be surprised by the typical dishes of this incredible territory, prepared with top-quality ingredients. Don’t miss the famous Sorrento lemons, as well as PDO olive oil, a steaming plate of gnocchi alla sorrentina and provolone del monaco.
