Oases in the Mediterranean
Hidden coves, secluded villages and typical Mediterranean flavours. Surrounded by Europe’s largest Marine Protected Area, the Egadi archipelago, in the province of Trapani, is formed by Favignana, the ‘big butterfly’ on the sea, Levanzo and Marettimo. All three islands are the right destination for travelling far from the hustle and bustle of the city, and living in close contact with nature, at a relaxed and pleasant pace.
In Favignana, the largest by extension, you can also disembark by car. However, we recommend that you walk or cycle through its narrow streets, discovering the most picturesque corners and reaching its beautiful blue coves. The island’s soul lies in the legends of local fishermen, who still like to tell tourists about their mythical adventures at the former tonnara Florio, now a museum. Sailing around the island, perhaps by renting a traditional gozzo or dinghy, you can admire the rugged coastline of Favignana and swim in fantastic inlets such as Cala Rossa, the most famous, Cala Azzurra, Grotta del Genovese and Sospiri. Also not to be missed is the Bue Marino beach, set among white tuffaceous cliffs.
Levanzo is a small paradise of 300 souls, made up of white houses with sky-blue windows. It is the perfect destination for divers and archaeology enthusiasts, who will be able to rediscover ancient finds dating back to Roman times, rock paintings and engravings. Finally, the wild Marettimo, ideal for hiking and trekking in a lush and surprising nature. One of the most beautiful trails is the one leading to Punta Troia, where a medieval fort has become a castle. You can also reach the Lighthouse of Punta Libeccio and Monte Falcone. Some of the bays can only be reached by sea, but you may easily find a kind fisherman who will be happy to take you and be your guide!
