Matera’s scenic beauty
One of the most striking testimonies to the special relationship between man and nature can be seen in the Natural Archaeological Park of Muterano’s Rock Churches, commonly known as Parco della Murgia Materana. Established by the Basilicata region in 1990, it has been protected by Unesco since 2007 and preserves countless archaeological assets such as around 150 rock churches and some prehistoric remains. The flora and fauna are also significant. The gryphon owl, which is often found nesting on the roofs of the ‘Sassi’ is the symbol of the park. In addition, birdwatchers can discover buzzards, red kites and Egyptian vultures, the smallest bird of prey in Europe. Along the beautiful paths, you will be able to find wolves, porcupines, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs and wild boars: a true Mediterranean oasis!
Another Natural Reserve to visit is San Giuliano, famous for its archaeological area, where you can see remains from the 4th century B.C. and prehistoric finds!
