Vulcano’s thermal mud baths

The well-known Pozza dei Fanghi, on the island of Vulcano, is an open-air thermal resort. This location, a short distance from the harbour, is a naturally fed hot spring water pond. Approximately fifty centimetres deep, the pool reaches a temperature of thirty-four degrees and is a real treat in spring and autumn. While in summer, it is recommended to bathe during the early morning hours or late evening, give the high temperature.

The wonder of this place lies in the fact that, thanks to a chemical phenomenon, a litre of biologically pure mud is created every sixty seconds. The beneficial effects of this mud mainly affect those suffering from rheumatism and back pain, but its healing properties also help combat and soothe skin diseases. Just a few metres from the pool is the ‘hot water‘ area, where the constantly bubbling sea offers a natural whirlpool and the opportunity to rinse off after a mud therapy treatment. In addition, it is possible to benefit from the Fumarole with regenerating inhalations. As with all thermal cures, visitors are subject to a few restrictions in order to protect their health, such as not letting children under five years of age bathe, not staying in the water for more than twenty consecutive minutes, and never diving in after eating. It is also recommended not to apply mud to your face without a thorough diagnosis by your doctor and to avoid contact with your eyes.

For a souvenir of this experience, you can find a line of products based on clay from sulphurous springs and rich in minerals. The mix of thermal water and Vulcano’s mud is the perfect basis for creating useful and healthy cosmetics: from anti-cellulite body cream to purifying face masks and soaps, shampoos and scalp creams. Experiencing the island of Vulcano also means welcoming Mother Nature’s warm embrace.
