Attractions in Cilento

Nature and culture in close contact

Cilento is an extraordinary destination for those who wish to discover all the faces of a unique land boasting many artistic and scenic beauties. Some of the most interesting natural sites include Valle delle Orchidee, a 13-kilometre-long path where you can see different species of wild orchids, Venus’ Hair, a fantastic and wild waterfall born from the Rio Bussentino, Castelcivita Caves, ideal for lovers of adventure and speleology, and Caves of Pertosa, a spectacular complex of karstic cavities located 263 metres below sea level.

Recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, the Archaeological Park of Paestum is the cultural symbol of this location. There are three different temples: the temple of Hera, dedicated to the goddess of fertility, the temple of Ceres, built for Athena, and the temple of Neptune, probably dedicated to Apollo. Furthermore, in the public area you can see the heroon, the ekklesiasterion and some buildings of Roman origin such as the amphitheatre and the forum. Also not to be missed is the nearby Archaeological Museum which houses, among many finds unearthed during excavations, the Tomb of the Diver, a splendid example of classical painting. In Padula you will be able to visit another Unesco-protected property: the Certosa di San Lorenzo, the largest monastic monument in southern Italy. Built by Tommaso Sanseverino in 1306, this citadel contains impressive gems, one of which is the 15,000-square-metre cloister.
