Culture just a step away from the sea
Taormina is one of the most fascinating and visited locations in Sicily. The town, famous for having seduced internationally renowned poets and writers over the years, offers an interesting historical and cultural heritage. The undisputed symbol of this town is the Greek Theatre: second in size only to that of Syracuse, it was built by the Greeks in the 3rd century B.C. to stage musical plays and comedies. Later enlarged by the Romans, it was used as a venue for wild fights between gladiators and ferocious beasts. For a relaxing walk, we recommend visiting the Villa Comunale, where you can stroll through a beautiful English-style garden created by Lady Florence Trevelyan Cacciola, a Scottish noblewoman who spent her life in Taormina from 1884. From here you can enjoy a very impressive view of the coast and Mount Etna.
Moving towards the historic centre, we find Piazza IX Aprile, where you can stop for a refreshing coffee granita! Here, you can admire the Clock Tower, the stairs of the Church of San Giuseppe and Casa Floresta, where many remains from the 15th and 16th centuries are preserved. In Also in the centre of Taormina, you will find the Palazzo Corvaja, an aristocratic villa featuring different architectural styles, a unique testimony to the different dominations that have characterised this lovely village throughout history.
