The Elephant Fountain

The beautiful Elephant Fountain is located in the centre of Piazza Duomo. The elephant and Catania have been deeply connected since time immemorial, so that the animal ended up becoming the official symbol of the city. Built by Vaccarini in 1737, it consists of a lava stone elephant supporting an obelisk topped by a globe with a crown of palm and olive leaves and an inscription dedicated to Saint Agatha. The pachyderm trunk faces the Cathedral of Saint Agatha.
