The Roman Amphitheatre in Lecce is the most relevant testimony to the Roman era and to Lupiae, the city’s ancestor. It was built between the Augustan and Trajan-Adrian periods. It was discovered in the early 20th century during the reconstruction of the Bank of Italy building.
The visible part represents only one third of the entire structure, while the rest is hidden under Piazza Sant’Oronzo. The amphitheatre supposedly measured 102 x 83 metres, with an arena of 53 x 34 metres. It might have held about 25,000 spectators!
