The Cartastorie

The Cartastorie is the Banco di Napoli’s historical archive museum. It was created to promote Neapolitan culture, all the stories and celebrities that have animated local economy over the centuries, through ancient public banks. It contains around 80 kilometres of shelves storing millions of names and hundreds of thousands of payments and reasons for payment. All these documents trace the social fabric of the entire Mezzogiorno, from 1573 to the present day.

On the multimedia tour, you will listen to fascinating tales and important events. Some examples are: the 1656 plague, the construction of the San Carlo Theatre, the payments to Caravaggio for his seven Opere della Misericordia (Works of Mercy), anecdotes related to the miracle of San Gennaro, and the slave market which was held at the port. In addition, you can leaf through the archive volumes, read them and experience the unique atmosphere that only Naples can provide.
