In Ragusa’s Baroque Piazza Duomo lies, most likely, the most beautiful church in the city: the Duomo of San Giorgio. Between 1739 and 1775, immediately after the 1963 earthquake that destroyed the ancient part of the city, the Duomo was rebuilt on the ruins of the Church of San Nicola. All that remains of the old cathedral is the 15th century Catalan-Gothic portal.
The current elegant Baroque structure is characterised by a splendid façade, one of the best examples of Sicilian Baroque. Inside, the church has three naves divided by stone pillars and important paintings. Where the transept and nave meet, there is a double dome. Also visible in the central nave is the 3368-pipe organ, Organum Maximum, which represents one of the finest works of organ-making art.
