The Duomo of Amalfi is the monument overlooking the ancient Maritime Republic of Campania and represents Amalfi in the world. It was built in the 9th century and renovated in 1203 with Arab-Norman forms. It was finally rebuilt in the 19th century after a terrible collapse.
Access to the cathedral is via a picturesque flight of steps. The façade is decorated by a huge and colourful mosaic depicting Christ amongst the Evangelists. The Romanesque bell tower from 1276, covered in mosaic tiles, is magnificent. The bronze door of the cathedral comes from Constantinople.
Inside the majestic Christian temple you can admire the Mother of Pearl Cross from the Holy Land and the Baptistery made of Egyptian red porphyry.
The Duomo is dedicated to Sant’Andrea, first disciple of Jesus and protector of Amalfi, and houses his reliquary bust. In the very precious Crypt, there is a silver urn with the saint’s relics. The central altar in the Crypt is by Fontana. Next to the present Cathedral is the Basilica of the Holy Crucifix.
Also worth visiting is the arabesque Chiostro del Paradiso (13th century). Finally, in the Diocesan Museum you can see the Cathedral’s rich Treasury.
