Veiled Christ and Cappella San Severo

Cappella Sansevero is a treasure of international artistic heritage, as well as being one of the most important Neapolitan places of worship. The Cappella is an aristocratic mausoleum in the heart of ancient Naples, near Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, and houses masterpieces such as the Veiled Christ, Modesty and Release from Deception.

The masterpiece for which the Sansevero Chapel is world famous is the Veiled Christ. The life-size marble statue created by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753 represents the dead Christ covered by a shroud. There are two elements of this work that leave anyone gazing at it in wonder and disbelief: the peculiar weaving effect of the shroud and the extraordinary fact that the entire work was created from a single block of marble. Antonio Canova, Matilde Serao and the poet Adonis are just some of the many important admirers of this sculptural jewel of all time.
