Certosa of San Giacomo

The Certosa of San Giacomo is one of the most important buildings in Capri. An imposing 14th-century monastery with a troubled history: born as a religious residence, a refuge during battles, a barracks and then a prison, until it was used as a military hospital.

Today, the Certosa of San Giacomo is home to a civic library and houses a museum dedicated to the Symbolist painter Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach. The small and large cloister, together with the Gothic portal and the Baroque bell tower, give the Certosa an unquestionable artistic and architectural value.
