The Capodimonte Museum holds paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and weapons collections. These collections belonged to the Farnese, Bourbon and Savoy families. The Museum is located in a former magnificent residence, built in the 18th century by Carlo di Borbone on the hillside of Naples.
The Capodimonte residence was built to house the works of art that Carlo of Borbone had inherited from his mother Elisabeth Farnese. Since 1957, the palace has housed one of Italy’s most important museums: the Capodimonte National Museum and Galleries. The museum has also welcomed the medieval and modern art collections from the National Museum and more recently a contemporary art section with works by internationally renowned artists. The Capodimonte Museum is particularly known for its porcelain collection.
