The Archaeological site of Velia in Ascea Marina is one of the most interesting attractions in the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, together with Paestum. Velia, called Elea by the Greeks (hence the famous Eleatic school of Parmenides, Zeno and Melissus) was a rich and powerful city, one of the best known in Magna Graecia. It was located right in the centre of the trade routes between Greece and Etruria. The most striking feature for visitors is the Pink Gate, one of the oldest arch examples built in the West.
