The Angevin Castle is the imposing manor house in the eastern part of the island, where the old town is located, near the bridge connecting the old part of the town to the new one. It is almost completely surrounded by the sea. It guards the port and the town thanks to its strategic position.
The Angevins and Aragonese made substantial changes to this castle of Roman origins: the quadrangular plan of the structure, with three turrets and a polygonal tower, was almost completely isolated by moats on all sides. In addition, in 1522 a fifth lower and wider tower, the Rivellino, was built ahead of the city walls. This made the castle an avant-garde structure in the defence system.
The Rivellino was used as a cinema until it was closed. Today, the entire castle has been redeveloped and thanks to a new project, spaces have been provided for exhibitions, cultural events and small theatre performances.
