Main attractions
Culture, art, nature. In Catania, one of Sicily’s main attractions, you can enjoy a unique travel experience! In the historical centre, more precisely in Piazza Duomo, you will find ‘u Liotru‘, the undisputed symbol of the entire city. The lava stone statue depicts an elephant, surmounted by an obelisk placed in the centre of a marble fountain. A few steps away is the major place of worship: the Cathedral of Sant’Agata. Built between 1086 and 1094 at the behest of Count Roger, it was erected on the remains of the Achilles Baths and a pagan temple, both dating back to Roman times. Inside, among many wonders, you will be able to see the funeral monument dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini and ‘A Cammeredda’, a small room full of frescoes containing the precious casket of the beloved ‘Santuzza”.
Another very important monument is the Ursino Castle, commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. Seat of parliament during the period of the Sicilian Vespers, it later became the residence of the Aragonese. Today it houses the city’s Civic Museum, where the Benedictine and Biscari collections are kept. If you are a fan of popular traditions, then take a stroll to the Pescheria, a historic fish market, picturesque and full of folklore.
Catania is also famous for its privileged location, right at the foot of Mount Etna, a volcano that is still active today. Thanks to special off-road vehicles and the help of expert guides, you can reach the areas open to visitors for a unique excursion!
