Art and culture in the city
Naples is one of the most intense and fascinating cities in the south. In recent years, it has been a favourite destination for millions of tourists from all over the world. Its historic centre, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, preserves over 2500 years of history and is rich in museums of great art and culture. The artistic richness of ancient Partenope extends throughout Spaccanapoli, from the Church of Gesù Nuovo to the Museum Complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore, and ends at the Cathedral, where the Treasure of San Gennaro is kept.
In the historical centre there are also other masterpieces: from Cappella Sansevero to the majolica-tiled cloister of the Monastery of Santa Chiara, all the way to Piazza del Plebiscito with the San Carlo Theatre, the oldest opera house in Europe, and Palazzo Reale, the famous residence of the Bourbon dynasty.
