Nature in Syracuse

Where nature and history intertwine

Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve and the Pantalica Reserve are oases where you can spend peaceful days in contact with the most unspoilt nature.

Cavagrande del Cassibile was inhabited during several eras, as evidenced by finds and tombs along the way. The area covers 2700 hectares and is traversed by the river of the same name, which has carved suggestive deep canyons. In addition, at the bottom of the valley, waterfalls and small lakes have formed, which can be accessed via the famousCruci Scale. Here, tourists and visitors like to dive and cool off on hot summer days. To the north, we find the Grotte dei Briganti, characteristic cave dwellings.

The Pantalica Reserve lies nestled between the Calcinara and Anapo rivers, and is the largest necropolis in all of Europe, as well as a UNESCO protected site. One of the most beautiful attractions is the ancient city of Giarrananuti, which dates back to the Bronze Age. Mountain-biking enthusiasts can visit the reserve by means of two bicycle and pedestrian routes: a 5 km sloping route within the Giarrananuti forest and another that branches off on the former Syracuse-Vizzini railway line.
