Lampedusa

Lampedusa: In the Caribbean of the Mediterranean!

Golden beaches, glimpses of blue blending between sky and sea, wild coves and unspoilt nature on the last strip of Italy: Lampedusa! The cultures that have succeeded one another over the centuries have made this land a truly irresistible place with a fascinating tradition, which still resists the passing of time.

Lampedusa is the largest island in the Pelagie Archipelago. Its beauty is barren and wild, its sea is clear and its beaches enchanting. Some of its bays and shores are even national heritage sites and are part of the Naturalistic Reserve Island of Lampedusa. The Island of Rabbits is famous for its strong Mediterranean colours and the presence of Caretta Caretta turtles.

The island, described by Homer as the ‘navel of the Mediterranean’, lies in the centre of the Sicilian Channel, 37 miles from the Tunisian coast and 47 from Sicily, but its wonderful sea is not its only attraction. The island also offers unspoilt Mediterranean scrubland. Just follow the numerous paths maintained by the Azienda Forestale and let yourself be surprised by the scents carried by the wind or by breathtaking views, as your gaze wanders over the lava flows lapped by the sea and sweeps beyond the horizon into the infinite blue.

One of the most famous places is undoubtedly the Rabbit Beach, repeatedly awarded as the most beautiful beach in Europe and the world. A truly unmissable event is the hatching of the eggs of Caretta Caretta turtles, which choose this wonderful tongue of sand for nesting. Offshore, on the other hand, you can watch the spectacular jumps of the dolphins that love to chase boats and play with each other. Moreover, on the main street, Via Roma, you can find several craft shops and bars, where you can have an aperitif or a fresh granita!
