The Zingaro Nature Reserve stretches over seven kilometres: a good 1620 hectares of pure beauty, including mountains, beautiful landscapes and beaches, coves and stacks. A flora of broom, mastic trees, pearl grass, Todaro lemons, dwarf palms, sea fennel, cornflowers and hardy lionmouths, orchids, saffron and buttercups.
It provides shelter to more than 40 bird species, including Bonelli’s eagles, very rare in Italy, solitary sparrows, nightingales, hawks, buzzards and kestrels, and a fauna of foxes, wild rabbits, weasels, vipers and Sicilian lizards. A wall of Monte Passo di Lupo is covered by centuries-old ivy.
The marine flora and fauna are among the most colourful. There are also some red coral colonies and many underwater caves. The Zingaro Reserve also includes the prehistoric Uzzo Cave.
