Aragonese Castle

The Aragonese Castle is in the heart of all islanders; it is the symbol of the Ischia. It stands on a small island connected to the ancient village of Ischia Ponte by a 220-metre stone bridge.

The first fortress dates back to Greek times, but the modern appearance of the Castle is due to Alfonso I of Aragon. He rebuilt the old keep from the Angevin period in 1441, joined the islet to the Borgo di Celsa and had mighty walls and fortifications built. In times of need, this fortress offered protection to most of the people in Ischia.  The castle can be reached by a mule track, also dating back to Alfonso d’Aragona, or by a lift.

Besides the various churches, the Bourbon prison, the Clarisse cemetery and the crypt, a tour of the Castle will also offer you unforgettable views from the many viewpoints. Today, the Castle is also home to the European Institute of Restoration. At the beginning of July, Ischia Film Festival takes place in its premises.
