Between Noto, Syracuse and Avola lies Cavagrande del Cassibile, covering some 2700 hectares. Due to the many human settlements in this area, and the many archaeological finds, it was decided that this area should be protected as a Nature Reserve. The Cassibile river has created with its course unspoilt deep gorges and fantastic canyons, one of which is the Kakyparis of the Greeks, surrounded by greenery. Diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey fly undisturbed, as do the peregrine falcon and the buteo buteo. Other animal species, such as martens, tree frogs and various tortoises populate these places. Among the flora, colourful wild orchids provide captivating colours with their blooms.
