Tonnara del Secco is located in the Gulf of Firriato, in San Vito Lo Capo. Its name refers to the presence of a very shallow seabed in the Monte Monaco area. In operation since 1412, it was expanded in 1860, when the construction of the tuna processing plant was begun.
The activity was interrupted in 1914, and in 1965 the tuna fishery was closed for good. Today this historic building, an example of industrial archaeology, is in a total state of disrepair. A stone’s throw from Tonnara del Secco, you can see what remains of the ancient cetariae tanks from the 4th century BC. In these tanks, a fish sauce called garum was made, much loved by the Romans.
