The Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve, established in 1990, stretches between the municipalities of Avola, Siracusa and Nota and covers an area of around 2700 hectares. Here flows the Cassibile River, the ancient Kakyparis, which has carved fascinating canyons and very deep gorges over the years. The natural lakes and beautiful waterfalls are a place of refreshment on sultry summer days.
The old necropolises, in which grave goods and ceramics have been found, are of considerable historical interest. Excursion enthusiasts can walk along several paths through the rich flora of the reserve, from wild orchids to lentisk and myrtle.
