Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo was built – according to tradition – in 490, with the first apparition of Archangel Michael. The architecture of the first Christian building is based on the canons of pre-Romanesque churches, and was later slightly modified by the Swabians and Normans, and finally by the Angevins.
The sanctuary’s landmark is definitely ‘The Archangel’s Grotto’, reached after climbing eighty-nine steps; here is a bronze door made in Constantinople and offered by Pantalene Commeno in 1706. This cave was mentioned by the non-profit institution National Geographic as one of the ten most beautiful caves in the world.
