The Church of Sant’Irene dei Teatini, in Via Vittorio Emanuele II, dates back to the 16th century and was built in 1591 in honour of Lecce’s patron saint (until 1656). The church reflects the structure of the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome, where the same architect Francesco Grimaldi worked.
The sumptuous façade has a double order and double stylistic layout, while inside there is a Latin cross plan with a single nave. On the nave sides, there are three interconnected chapels with elliptical vaults. The altars in the chapels, dedicated to certain saints, are also worth seeing.
