The Monumental Complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore is located in Naples old city centre, in Piazza San Gaetano, on the Decumano Maggiore. Masaniello’s famous revolt against Spanish troops in 1647 started from the complex bell tower. The complex includes the Church, the Cloister, the Halls, the Museum and the Crypt and is one of the most significant examples of the ancient city stratification.
The splendid Gothic-style basilica has a single nave Latin cross plan. The polygonal apse is remarkable. The Archaeological Area includes the 5th-century BC Greek agora, the ancient market square, which in Roman times was extended both up and down Via Tribunali.
The cloister houses one of the most beautiful wells in Naples and a statue of San Lorenzo by Fanzago.
In the San Lorenzo Maggiore Opera Museum, you can admire Greco-Roman and early Christian finds, frescoes from the church and a collection of 18th-century Neapolitan crib figures.
