The Greek Theatre of Syracuse is located within the large Neapolis Archaeological Park, the most important archaeological area in the city. It was built in the 5th century B.C. on the slopes of Mount Temenite, and was later transformed in Roman times. Taking advantage of the natural lines of Mount Temenite, the Greek Theatre was built to enhance the acoustics and with the common feature of all Greek theatres, namely the panoramic view.
Since 1914, thanks to the work of the Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico (National Institute of Ancient Drama), the theatre has been used for the staging of plays, Greek opera and opera.
