Royal Palace of Palermo

The Royal Palace of Palermo is also known as the Palace of Normans. They transformed and expanded the building, built in the 9th century by the Arabs, and made it the centre of power.

It is a very rich palace, as can also be seen by visiting the royal family’s church and the Palatine Chapel, which contains some of the most beautiful Byzantine mosaics in Sicily. Later, the structure became the residence of the Spanish viceroys. We are in the 16th century. The construction of the Hercules Room with its frescoes by Velázquez dates back to this period. Today, the palace houses the Sicilian Regional Assembly.
