The Ancient Theatre of Taormina is a part of the city’s archaeological heritage, located a few steps away from Corso Umberto, in a marvellous vantage point. It was built in the third century by the Greeks who landed in Sicily on the coast of Naxos and still retains much of its original construction. It is the second largest classical theatre centre in Sicily (after that of Syracuse) and appears intact in all its beauty.
The Theatre was one of the liveliest centres of Greek culture and still today brings a wide range of performances to its stage. During the summer, it becomes the setting for concerts, ballets, theatre, opera and symphonic performances. In addition, Taormina’s Ancient Theatre is home to the Taormina Film Fest, an international film festival that for years has provided breathtaking emotions in a unique beautiful setting.
