Sassi of Matera

Sassi of Matera was the first site in southern Italy to enter the Unesco World Heritage List. This magical place, one of the oldest on the planet, is the most significant example of an urban centre carved into the rock and in perfect harmony with nature. Inhabited since the Palaeolithic, from the 8th-9th century it was the site where many Benedictine and Byzantine monasteries settled inside its caves. We suggest you rely on one of the authorised guides on site to visit its most suggestive corners.
